Mom's Split Pea Soup

I remember this soup as a kid! My Mom would make it whenever we had a hambone left over from an Easter or Thanksgiving dinner. We just celebrated Easter last month so I wanted to share this recipe while I had a fresh one! You can always freeze the hambone and make this soup whenever you’re in the mood! I hope you enjoy this taste of my childhood…

Ingredients

  • 1 hambone

  • 1 lb bag (2 Cups) split peas

  • 5-6 carrots - chopped

  • 1 Large sweet onion - chopped

  • 1 Tbs olive oil

  • 5 Cups chicken broth

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions

Chop the carrots and onion then saute them with about a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat - just until onions are starting to get translucent. Remove from heat.

Rinse the split peas in cool water to remove any dust.

In a large crock pot add the hambone, peas, onions and carrots. Pour in the chicken broth and add the garlic powder, salt and pepper. Cook on the “high” setting for four hours.

Before serving, scoop out the hambone onto a plate and pick off all the meat. Toss the meat back into the crockpot making sure any bones have been removed.

Serve with freshly baked bread or dinner rolls!
