Poppy's Apple Crumble

This is a family recipe that my husband grew up with. I learned how to make it during our last trip to England while visiting Tim’s family. It’s the perfect Autumn treat, especially when you can use freshly picked apples!

Ingredients

Filling

  • 8-10 tart apples (like Granny Smith) - cored, peeled and cubed

  • 1 Cup of raw cane sugar

  • Juice from one orange

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Crumble

  • 1 Cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter - softened

  • 2 Cups of unbleached, all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp sugar

  • Plus 1 Tbs sugar

Directions

Squeeze fresh orange juice into a medium bowl. Core, peel and cube apples - toss into orange juice to keep from browning, Add sugar and vanilla extract and mix together. Pour into a 8x10 baking dish. Set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl add softened butter, flour, salt and sugar. Use your hands to massage into a crumbly texture. Pour crumble into baking dish on top of apples. Gently press down. Evenly sprinkle 1 Tbs of sugar on top.

Bake at 375F for 30 minutes. Turn on broil to 450F for just a few minutes until sugar begins to brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream!
